Work

While awaiting a flight at a New York City airport the other day, I spotted an airport employee who clearly loves his job.

I was still recovering from being rudely corralled through the security line, so this guy’s good energy really caught my eye... He seemed so happy to be at work!

He was energetic, engaged, and he was doing a REALLY good job.  I actually felt safer because he was there.

Ok, he was the bomb sniffing dog... but still!

Even though he’s a pooch, not a person, he got me thinking about the difference in performance when we do something we LIKE to do vs something we DON’T like to do.

It’s a completely different energy that you can spot a mile away!

When a person hates their job they don’t do it well- they can’t!  There’s too much resistance.

This person will be slower, make more mistakes, and less likely to take initiative.

But a person (or dog) who likes their work - who can find meaning and fun in it- will do a much better job!  They will engage, be more efficient and effective.

It has very little to do with the actual job itself and everything to do with the perspective of the person doing it.

As I watched that dog happily sniffing the bags, this thought popped into my head:

“Not everything is fun, but we can look for fun in everything!” For the next few days I really thought about this concept.

I purposefully tried to find the game, or something enjoyable, in everything I did- especially the more tedious tasks.

So when the dishwasher mysteriously overflowed, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to practice being that pooch.

Instead of being annoyed while moping up the water, I put on my Candies and danced that floor dry! (bikini and Corvette shirt were already outfit du jour)

You know what happened?? I had a blast AND the floor got super clean!

The fact of the matter is sometimes we HAVE to work, but we don’t have to be miserable.  Your perspective is 100% within your control- sometimes you just gotta put on your Candies to shift it!

I hope this is helpful!

Please leave a comment, lemme know your thoughts

Always with love- co
